Walking Trails

On the Trail in The Cairngorms

Boat of Garten lies on the edge of Abernethy National Nature Reserve, and is the perfect base for low-level and high-level walking and climbing in the Cairngorms and the Monadhliath. There is a wide choice of walks from an hour to a full day or multi-day walk.

Low-level walking:

Walk in the pinewoods bordering the village, and back along the river Spey or follow the Speyside Way through Abernethy Forest to Nethybridge, and catch a bus or the steam train back. Visit the osprey centre at Loch Garten on the way! Or take the Speyside Way south to Aviemore across the moor, with great views of the Cairngorms.

High-level walking:

To the south the Cairngorms provide wonderful high level walks, with high summits, and huge sub-arctic plateaux, with ptarmigan, golden eagle, dotterel and mountain hare. To the west you can explore the Monadhliath range with their lonely glens and corries. These are among the least visited hills in the Highlands. There are numerous munros (mountains with summits above 3000ft) in the Cairngorms, which require an OS map, compass and navigation skills.

Come into the shop, where we sell OS maps and guide books. We can provide advice on your trip into the hills, or provide professional guides who will show you some of these spectacular areas, with it's special wildlife.
